What is a Work Licence?

A work licence (officially called a Section 87 Order) is a special type of Queensland driver’s licence that allows you to continue driving for work purposes even if you’ve been convicted of drink or drug driving.

When the Magistrate convicts you of drink driving, they normally disqualify you from driving for a period of time (usually 1-9 months for first offenses). However, if losing your licence would cause you extreme hardship – particularly losing your job – the court can grant you a work licence instead.

With a work licence, you can:

✓ Drive to and from work
✓ Drive during work hours for employment purposes
✓ Drive clients, equipment, or materials for your job
✓ Maintain your employment and income

Restrictions apply:

✗ No driving outside work hours (unless specifically permitted)
✗ Zero alcohol while driving on work licence
✗ Must carry work licence certificate at all times
✗ Limited to routes and times specified by court

A work licence is NOT the same as your normal licence – it’s a restricted licence that keeps you working while acknowledging the seriousness of the offense.

  • Very high BAC readings (over 0.15%)
