What is a Work Licence?

A work licence is NOT the same as your normal licence – it’s a restricted licence that keeps you working while acknowledging the seriousness of the offence.

A work licence (known as a Section 87 Order) allows an eligible driver to continue driving for work purposes, even after being convicted with certain drink or drug driving offences.

Ordinarily, when a person is convicted with drink or drug driving offence, the Magistrates Court must impose a period of licence disqualification, typically between 1 and 9 months for a first offence, dependent on the circumstances.

However, if losing your licence would cause extreme hardship, particularly loss of employment, the Court has discretion to grant a work licence instead of imposing a full disqualification.

Restrictions apply:

✗ No driving outside work hours (unless specifically permitted)
✗ Zero alcohol while driving on work licence
✗ Must carry work licence court order at all times
✗ Limited to routes and times specified by the court

A work licence is NOT the same as your normal licence – it’s a restricted licence that keeps you working while acknowledging the seriousness of the offence.
