If your vehicle has been detected speeding by a speed camera, you will receive an infringement notice asking you to either pay a fine in 28 days, attend court or nominate a driver. If the vehicle is registered under two people, the person whose name appears first will receive the notice as the operator of the vehicle. Fines and other demerit points for speeding detected by cameras are the same as getting a speeding ticket.
Speeding Fine Price & Penalty
- If your vehicle exceeds the speed limit by less than 13km/hr over the speed limit, you pay a penalty amount of $177 and lose 1 demerit point.
- If your vehicle exceeds the speed limit by more than 13km/hr, but less than 20km/hr over the speed limit, you pay a penalty amount of $266 and lose 3 demerit points.
- If your vehicle exceeds the speed limit by more than 20km/hr, but less than 30km/hr over the speed limit, you pay a penalty amount of $444 and lose 4 demerit points.
- If your vehicle exceeds the speed limit by more than 30km/hr, but less than 40km/hr over the speed limit, you pay a penalty amount of $622 and lose 6 demerit points.
- If your vehicle exceeds the speed limit by more than 40km/hr, you receive a penalty amount of $1245, lose 8 demerit points and receive a 6-month suspension.
Double demerit points apply if you commit the speeding offence more than once in a year. Double demerit points also apply if you commit more than one seat-belt offence within 12 months.
Applying for a Special Hardship Order (SHO)
If your licence is suspended for 6 months due to speeding offence, you may apply for a Special Hardship Order. To receive a Special Hardship Licence, you must prove that losing your licence may result in severe hardship or financial problems for you and your family. If you are granted a special hardship licence, you may drive under specified circumstances; an example would be driving to work or hospital.
